About: New Delhi Railway Station (in Hindi Language)

About: New Delhi Railway Station (in Hindi Language)

The foundation stone of this building was laid on 7 February 1954 and the station was inaugurated on 16 April 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of India. The President started the station by pulling a silver signal lever and the President’s car was started from the new platform.

The stations built before independence were like palaces or forts. But this station was built in a modern way keeping in mind the design and attractiveness of modern architecture. The focus was more on passenger amenities and accessibility than station grandeur or beautification. In the next two decades, in 1977-78, seven crore rupees were spent and the station was upgraded, due to which in 1981 there was a daily traffic of 2.25 lakh passengers. In the year 1977-78, additional platforms were built and a second entrance was opened in the Ajmeri Gate direction for the convenience of the passengers. This feature of this station makes it unique among those stations which have two formal entrances. In the year 1998-99, two more platforms were built and the Ajmeri Gate direction complex area was improved. In the year 2008, four additional platforms were added, which increased the number to 16. In the year 2009, the entire façade was changed in the Ajmeri Gate direction of the station and significant changes were made in other areas. In the year 2010, in the Paharganj direction of the stations, white stones were installed in place of sandstone, and major changes were made to make the road traffic simple and efficient for the convenience of the passengers.

Today New Delhi Railway Station is one of the largest and busiest stations in the Indian Railways system, handling about four lakh passengers and 250 trains daily.

A New Experience – Instead of Metro, I Hired E-Rickshaw from Delhi Gate to Chandni Chowk

goSTOPS (Backpackers Hostel), Delhi Gate metro station – Gate No. 3 to Lal Quila metro station (for visiting Chandni Chowk) – The metro fare is Rs. 20.

One day I thought of visiting Chandni Chowk (opp. Red Fort) via E-Rickshaw, available at Delhi Gate, very near to goSTOPS.

And I was amazed that the E-Rickshaw sharing fare from Delhi Gate to Chandni Chowk – Rs. 10/- only per person.

I always enjoyed the metro ride but this time I enjoyed the E-Rickshaw ride and saved Rs. 10 too.

One should try different modes of conveyance/transport. Yes or No?

How much E-Rickshaw Fare I Paid from goSTOPS, Delhi Gate to New Delhi Railway Station (Ajmeri Gate side)

E-Rickshaw is most of the time during the day available outside goSTOPS, Delhi Gate metro station – Gate No. 3.

Generally, I travel via metro during my Delhi tour but this time for my New Delhi Railway Station visit, I thought of traveling via E-Rickshaw. And the fare I paid from goSTOPS, Delhi Gate metro station – Gate No. 3 till New Delhi Railway Station (Ajmeri Gate side) was unbelievable.

Rs. 20 only.

Yes, it was a sharing ride but very cheap. I recommend. Even, if you are coming from New Delhi Railway Station (Ajmeri Gate side) to goSTOPS, Delhi Gate, you may hire an E-Rickshaw but only if you have a little luggage, else prepaid auto is a better option. What say?

How much Auto Fare I Paid from New Delhi Railway Station (Ajmeri Gate side) to goSTOPS, Delhi Gate

During the Delhi tour, I stayed at goSTOPS – Backpackers Hostel very near to Delhi Gate metro station – Gate No. 3.

I received an email from goSTOPS mentioning the distance between the New Delhi Railway Station and the hostel.

They said that the hostel is 1.5 km from the New Delhi Railway Station and the Tuk Tuk or Auto Rickshaw will charge a maximum of Rs. 50.

Upon reaching the New Delhi Railway Station, I walk towards the Ajmeri Gate side exit instead of the Paharganj side. Auto Rickshaw drivers were already present and the fare they were asking was much more than Rs. 50.

I walk a little on the right-hand side to reach the Prepaid Taxi/Auto Booth on the left-hand side and paid only Rs. 50 for self and the luggage. Received a receipt – The passenger copy.

The traffic police on duty arranged the auto and I reached the hostel comfortably.

Thanks to goSTOPS for the sent email. It was helpful.
