Choti Patan Devi and Badi Patan Devi temples are some of the oldest and most sacred ones of the 51 Siddha Shakti Peethas.
The name of the city Patna, is widely believed to have been derived from the name of the Patan Devi Temples.
I met Shripati Dwivedi, Manoj Baba, and Krishna Giri – the priests of Choti Patan Devi temple, as well as Badi Patan Devi.
And following is the history narrated by them:
Once Daksha Prajapati, son of Lord Brahma, organized Yajna and invited every God but left out Lord Shiva, his own son-in-law.
Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, on learning that her husband had not been invited by her father for Yajna, in spite of objection from Lord Shiva not to visit uninvited, went to her father’s Yajna site.
When Sati found no seat allotted for her husband at the Yajna site, she felt humiliated and put an end to her life by jumping into the Yajna fire.
After knowing this, Lord Shiva, in his great anger and sorrow, carried her dead body on his shoulder and began to perform a tandava dance around the Triloka (three worlds).
The Gods were scared and requested Lord Vishnu to intervene to stop the holocaust.
At the request of the Gods, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati’s body with his Sudarshan Chakra. Wherever the limbs of the body of Sati fell, the places became Siddha Shakti Peethas.
Here at these temple sites, Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati – the first wife of Shiva, right thigh had fallen.
The idol at Choti Patan Devi came out of the well, and at Badi Patan Devi from a pit, and is swayambhu (self-manifested).
Both temples were renovated by King Akbar‘s General Man Singh.
Choti Patan Devi Temple Timings: 6:30 am – 12:30 Noon / 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Navratri – 24 hours open).
Badi Patan Devi Temple Timings: 6 am – 12 Noon / 2 pm – 9 pm (Navratri – 24 hours open).
(Tuesday is the auspicious special day, thus, the temple remains closed from 3 pm – 5 pm)
Sati is seated here as Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. And there is Bhairon Baba, Vishnu ji, and Ashtadalkamal.
Worship has been done here at these temples since time immemorial.
Choti Patan Devi is a Siddha-Peeth thus, you will also see Pindi and Badi Patan Devi is a Shakti-Peeth.
Thank you, priest, for enhancing my knowledge. Obeisance was offered wholeheartedly.
