Situated on the outskirts of Chitrakoot Dham, the Gupt Godavari caves temple consists of two hill caves. Beautiful natural carvings add to the charm of the caves. It is said that Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman stayed here for some time during their 14 years of exile.

The larger, higher, and wider cave has two stone-carved thrones believed to be of Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman. It is believed that Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman held court here.

Another cave is having a knee-high level of water. It is said that the water is connected to the River Godavari underground.

It is an amazing experience to walk barefoot in caves with cold water on your knees. Actually, it is a continuous stream flowing between two rocks which is known as Gupt Godavari.

The source of this stream is immeasurable.

The oxygen level in the caves can be low, so it is advisable to take care of yourself.

During the exile of Lord Ram, many deities came to Chitrakoot to meet him. The Goddess Godavari river is believed to have visited them by secretly appearing in the caves.
