Situated on the outskirts of Chitrakoot Dham, the Gupt Godavari caves temple consists of two hill caves. Beautiful natural carvings add to the charm of the caves. It is said that Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman stayed here for some time during their 14 years of exile.
The larger, higher, and wider cave has two stone-carved thrones believed to be of Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman. It is believed that Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman held court here.
Another cave is having a knee-high level of water. It is said that the water is connected to the River Godavari underground.
It is an amazing experience to walk barefoot in caves with cold water on your knees. Actually, it is a continuous stream flowing between two rocks which is known as Gupt Godavari.
The source of this stream is immeasurable.
The oxygen level in the caves can be low, so it is advisable to take care of yourself.
During the exile of Lord Ram, many deities came to Chitrakoot to meet him. The Goddess Godavari river is believed to have visited them by secretly appearing in the caves.
Gupt Godavari is amongst the most interesting natural wonder to visit in Chitrakoot Dham. One of the best attractions of Chitrakoot Dham. One of its kind. Must visit.
It is the place of meditation of Tridev Sage Atri and Mother Anusuiya where Sati Anusuiya by her spiritual power once changed Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh into Infants. It is the pious place where she preached to Mother Sita the lesson of loyalty to her husband. It is also believed that it was the spiritual power of Sati Anusuiya that gave birth to the river Mandakini-Ganga.
According to this episode, Nishadraj (one who helped Ram, Sita, and Lakshman cross the Ganges) blames Mata Kaikeyi when Ram, Lakshman, and Sita are in trouble during their exile.
Lakshman then explains to Nishadraj, saying that no one makes anyone happy or sad, but all enjoy the fruits of their own actions.

The king – Dasharatha was praying to Lord Shiva (Ashutosh) that his son Shri Ram may not leave for the forest for 14 years of exile.
O, Shiva! You are the one who is generous. So take away my sorrow by knowing me as your humble servant.
