Drona Cave at Sahastradhara – Guru Dronacharya did Penance Here

More than 25 natural water ponds I counted at Sahastradhara in Dehradun, but before entering the pond we visited Drona cave to offer prayers. Guru Dronacharya did penance here. Due to which the name of this temple is known as Drona Cave Shiva Temple. Sulfur water comes out here, drinking which cures stomach and skin diseases by taking bath.

The cave is super cool due to the water shower from the inner walls. I sat there for more than 10 minutes. It is believed Guru Dronacharya – Guru of Kauravas and Pandavas meditated inside the cave.

Sahastradhara meaning if I am correct is 1000 streams, and it is true as I can see many streams inside the cave as well as outside from the hill area. Other than Drona cave, there are a few more caves filled with water. Interesting location especially during the rainy season.

To reach Sahastradhara, a bus is one of the best public transport options from the Parade Ground/Lansdowne Chowk. The distance is approx. 15+ km.

Vehicle parking charges I paid – Rs. 10/-. There is a ropeway also to reach the top of the hill but I find it costly – Rs. 150/- per person, but it might be a useful service for many to visit the top of the hill for a better view of Sahastradhara.

In short, I like the cave, and I thoroughly enjoyed entering the pond.

Lockers for valuables are available by paying Rs. 30/-.
