Mumbai’s Famous ‘Kala Ghoda’ (Black Horse) Statue
The equestrian bronze statue of the British King Albert Edward VII, popularly called Kala Ghoda, is 12 feet 9 inches tall. Sculpted by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm. It was donated in 1876 by the industrialist and philanthropist, Sir Albert Sassoon in commemoration of the King’s visit to the city as Prince of Wales in 1875. It originally stood at the intersection of Rampart Row (now K. Dubash Marg) and Esplanade Road opposite the David Sassoon Library in South Mumbai. The area is still known as ‘Kala Ghoda’ though the statue was shifted to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo in August 1965.
