Buddha is in Bhumisparsha Mudra: One of the most common and popular mudras (hand gestures) found in Buddha statues is the Bhumisparsha mudra, or the earth touching gesture. It is believed that this posture of the Buddha, commemorates the Buddha’s victory over the demon King Mara. In Buddhism, it is believed that the Bhumisparsha mudra helps us to bring about the transformation from rage and anger to wisdom. The provenance of the image is Vishnupur, Bihar. (Arch. – 1681).
