What are the Former Names of Corbett National Park?
1936 – A Park is Born.
Sir Malcolm Hailey, Governor of United Provinces proposed a wildlife sanctuary in the Ramnagar forests. He sought expert advice from Jim Corbett and E.R. Smythies, Forest Conservator to identify a suitable area. The noted wildlifer F.W. Champion also contributed to the Park’s formation. And so in 1936 the first national park of mainland Asia was created. It was named ‘Hailey National Park.’
In 1952 the park was renamed ‘Ramganga National Park‘ but the name did not stay for long. In 1957 it was declared as ‘Corbett National Park‘ after the late Jim Corbett who had played an important role in its formation.
